What was your most heroic act ever in life?

Heroic acts happen around us all the time. We read about them in the news. They are carried out regardless of fear and not knowing what the outcome will be. Especially today when serving in the military gets the attention it deserves, there are countless courageous acts that we hear about. Think of all the heroic acts during the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

But how about looking closer to home? I pondered this question for a little while as I have to admit I could not come close to the newsworthy stories with my little example I eventually came up with. Quite a while ago I drove through town when I saw a trash container beginning to burn. It had been placed right next to a house with a wooden overhang close to an upright wooden beam that was connected to the roof.

My heart started to race away as if there was no tomorrow. “What should I do?”, I asked myself. I did not consider my safety at that moment in time –  I just did what had to be done. Fortunately, I had a car fire extinguisher with me that I used to put out the flames. It was enough to contain the fire until the fire company came along taking care of the rest. My action probably saved these people’s home and fortunately no one got hurt. It got started very slowly as the home owner had disposed of fire place ashes of the previous night’s fire. If for nothing else take away from this to never, ever dispose of fire place ashes in trash cans.

How big a deal was this in the overall scheme of things? Not big at all – it was one for the home owner and me though. How about you? Can you think of a heroic act that made a difference in people’s lives? Going through this mental exercise brings along two opportunities: You get to appreciate what other folks do for us, and second, you can feel good about yourself if you have a story (please share with us) that fits the bill.
