Entrepreneurs who inspire us: A baker receives a totally unexpected call

Entrepreneurs who inspire us: A baker receives a totally unexpected call Smaller FB

Entrepreneurs are an amazing bunch of people. They risk a lot, they work their bums off, and they innovate in order to survive and thrive. They also inspire us. Please find below the incredibly humbling phone call account of a local baker who owns and operates Cakes and Candies by Maryellen out of West Chester PA.

She received a heart wrenching call from a client whose life was significantly impacted by Maryellen. Read for yourself:

“I answered the phone at the bakery yesterday as I normally would…. There was this very small voice on the other end. I need to order a cake. I asked what the occasion was? Only to be told a funeral… For herself! Then I cried realizing who i was talking to. She said all I want for my celebration is your cake Maryellen. I said I can’t take this order over the phone. I’m on my way to your house!

As I pulled into the driveway today I knew this would be the last time I saw a very dear client who fought the biggest fight of her life to Cancer. I sat and hugged her and told her that she will be in a happier place very soon and in no more pain!

She said many things but in the end all she kept saying was your Cakes and the person who you are, we have had a chance to know and love. Have made us happy throughout the years through your creations and I want my entire family to be happy on my celebration day!!

Chris your wings have spread and heavens gates will be there to welcome you. Your beautiful girls and husband will treasure you for the rest of their lives. As you have made an impact on many.

God Bless.”

I have only met Maryellen once briefly, but I could tell right away that she has a great heart. This fits the profile of the vast majority of today’s entrepreneurs. They care, and therefore they will go out of their way making a positive difference for others. They increase their own potential, that of their teams and customers, and they will attempt elevating their organization’s potential along the way. They do not have to be the next Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg to be inspiring. Maryellen is such an awesome example of this.

When you get to know stories and awesome entrepreneurs like this, please make a point of stopping by and giving them your business. Who knows? Perhaps one day it will be us making such a call needing a cake.

  1. Very inspiring story. Thank you! I think entrepreneurs are so much more likely to be successful when they work for other people like this. It’s all about service. “we get paid in exact proportion to the service we provide.”

  2. Thank you! It is one of the toughest and also most rewarding lessons to learn as a leader-manager: park your ego and freely give of yourself and serve. The rewards are incredibly humbling on so many levels.
