Discover 7 ways of how to get inspired 

Who and what inspires me? In order to expend energy every day you have to be able to tap into an energy source yourself. A great portion of this energy comes from inspiration through external sources. Please find below a few thoughts on where those sources come from.

  • Mentors and coaches: A true mentor and coach listen to you and provide you with a lot of insight about yourself. They tap into the power that resides within you and ironically enough they inspire you with the ideas and thoughts that largely originated from your brain. Cool stuff.
  • Successful people: Let me clear up right from the get go what I mean by successful. Success to me is when someone masters something and to the outsider the most difficult stuff looks easy when this successful person does it. Money follows this success almost automatically. They are sustainably successful as they take care of themselves and strive for living a balanced life. They are really inspirational folks.
  • Quotes: Really cool quotes are short and convey simple to complex material and manage breaking them up into bite size pieces. Right after reading them you feel empowered and almost dumbfounded how simple some challenges are when viewed and articulated by really successful people (see description above about successful people).
  • Situations: Some situations are really challenging and once you have mastered them they can be really inspiring – because YOU went through the whole experience yourself, you learned from it, and you know how to do them even better next time.
  • Art, film, theater, and music: Nothing inspires quite like the aforementioned media. You get to experience all sorts of situations, people, situations etc in one spot and you may not even have to move an inch. Let your mind freewheel and take advantage of the new thought patterns that come your way.
  • Free time and vacation: Experiencing other locations, cultures, religion, people, etc through going to different places is another form of seeking inspiration. All you need is an open mind for all the different experiences along the way to and from your leisure activities and travels.
  • Faith and spirituality: A little (a lot too) solitude can go a long way for your intellect listen to your deeper connection to the divine and to your purpose. Nothing is more inspiring when you hear your own voice and you get the clarity you sought. Your faith and spirituality can really help inspire yourself and others.

Isn’t it fascinating how many different ways of seeking inspiration we can tap into? If you have a few more ideas about inspiration and where you get it from I would love for you to share it with me. I intend to follow up with a special edition blog post to expand on this topic. Too many folks seem to be running with their inspiration tanks on empty and that is no way to how to live your life.

“Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, you’re right”


“Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, you’re right” 

This quote is from Henry Ford and he got this right: I care or I don’t, it shows either way. Sticking around work because you need the money and that is a way to get it may be a way making ends meet, but it is a dead end career move. It will always show that you are not “in to it”. Your coworkers may notice it first and draw their own conclusions from it, your leadership will also notice. Guess what, while your job may never be in danger of getting eliminated because you are competent – you will end up getting stuck doing whatever you are doing now.

Only when you truly care about your job and what you do does this genuinely show. That can create an upward career spiral with fantastic results. First and foremost you will end up asking for more work that you love doing. Perhaps you may ask your manager do something different too. It’s not about the quantity but quality and greater responsibility that will make your work more fulfilling.

Beginning and ending a job always involve YOU. Make a choice to either get “in to it” or to get out. Understanding that this choice may not be easy at all to make, also realize that nothing ever changes, if the pain of remaining the same is not greater than the pain of changing.

2 ways how to be a better relationship builder and friend 

Have you ever wondered how some folks seem to be making people connections with ease while you struggled your way through with it? Some of us are truly born with this trait and are blessed in life with their relationship building talents. For anyone who struggles with this there is hope, because once you realize that you are in need of help there is a way how to get much better at it.

Some time ago I was interviewing a group of senior citizens on behalf of a church-visioning group. That is when the two simple ingredients to relationship building hit me like a freight train. My interviewees not only told me what they thought builds a sense of community, but here I was an almost total stranger who when he left, left as a new friend. This was due to the two main ingredients:

  • You need to spend some time with people. When you want a better relationship, you need to first invest in it. Start by you willing to spend some time with the folks you want to have a better relationship with. Here you may start with an e-mail or phone call. Ultimately, you are better off making time for a face-to-face interaction. Communication is a full body experience. Seeing and hearing the other person provides a much better opportunity to mutually understand each other at a deeper level.
  • You need to genuinely care. Can it be this simple? The concept is simple, but the execution thereof is much tougher because caring is something that you cannot fake. Caring comes in a few dimensions. You need to be willing and capable of demonstrating empathy and compassion.

Relationships are not owed to you – they are earned. They are earned one by one. Think of the folks that you end up with as your tribe. This is your own little microcosm that is often described with the over- and abused term “community”. A true community cares about others and certainly will bring the time it takes helping one another. Now it is your turn to make your contribution. Spend the time and care about others and they will start caring about you.

Find out about how to be an authentic leader – and it is really simple 

Along with the buzzword term authentic leader come a few more buzz words that are also non-descriptive. The leader ought to be authentic, she should provide contagious energy, she should be engaging the audience’s senses, she should be demonstrating vulnerability and perseverance, she should be exuding confidence, she should be personable, she should be believable, she should be a great listener, and have a load of charisma if at all possible.

Isn’t it hilarious how these adjectives are very descriptive and yet meaningless as they are not really all that exact? It is all subject to individual interpretation and yet every one of us kind of sort of knows what it is supposed to be about. As such it proves the adage of all nonverbal communication driving more than half of what people see. Roughly a third is your tone of voice and only a small amount of communication is through the actual words that you have chosen to convey your leadership.

To demonstrate this I have picked two random videos of CEO’s; not just any CEO, but airline ones. Just about all airlines claim how they love their customers and employees and invite us to fly their friendly skies. Fascinating, isn’t it? When you unravel why Colleen is fairing so much better you may have noticed the traits that let her stand out:

  • She is totally focused on others and not herself.
  • She shows vulnerability by being moved by the contributions of her team members.
  • She makes the speech all about them and not herself.
  • She makes eye contact with her team members.
  • How many things can you point out?

Why is she so much more believableauthentic – than Richard? At the bottom line it shrinks down to one thing for me and I am hoping that I have stirred your snow globe a little with this again: It’s her servitude. How willing are you to serve others before yourself?

She is going through great lengths making the event to be for her team members and not all about herself. That is so different with Richard. He sits in the middle of everyone’s attention and when you really listen to the conversation with him it sounds forced and not genuine.

Did I mention that this makes your more successful too? You have not heard about how greatly successful and admirable Delta Airlines is, right? There is a reason why they are where they are and why Southwest is such an admired and overall successful brand.

Surprising, isn’t it? Being an authentic leader boils down to serving others with your brain, heart, and soul; then it will become organic and long term sustainable. Parking your ego will be the first and most important step you can take. Don’t you like the simplicity of this concept?
