Facing your greatest fear 

I used to not think twice about how I should confront my top fears. I though I had no choice. Fear was fear and I did not get close to them at all. Avoidance was my mode of operation – if you cannot change anything anyway, just avoid getting close. That is why it had not occurred to me that my primary top number one fear was my own shadow. I was afraid how powerful I could be and I did not let my own light shine sort of speak. I owe a lot of building up my strength to Marianne Williamson’s “Our Greatest Fear”. See what you think.

There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.

And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.

As we are liberated from our own fear,
our presence automatically liberates others.

8 things helping enrich your life and that of the people in your life 

We are blessed beyond measure with all the different people who come into our life. Keeping your talents to yourself is not only selfish, but you are wasting your life’s potential away. Even if you consider yourself to be an introvert, you still cannot ignore the fact that we humans are a very social bunch who managed to survive a lot better as a community. Singling yourself out is all but unnatural and most certainly will limit what life has got to offer for everyone of us. Here are 8 examples of how you can turn this situation around.

  • Be prudent with the time you spend at work. Have you ever seen a gravestone engraved with a sentence like this: “I wished I could have spent another hour at the office”? Try achieving a healthy work / family / social activity balance. Who needs you the most?
  • Go to your kid’s activities. Do not lead a life of regret. Kids grow up so fast that you will lose track of time in a heartbeat and before you know it they will be out of the house. Spend as much time with them and do not miss any of their school and leisure time activities. This time will never come back.
  • Travel as much as your budget and time will allow. The world is out there for us to experience. People and places are different from where you currently live and you only need to go a few miles for starters checking out a different county or state. Comparing and contrasting your life and environment add to the spice of life. You will see that we people are really not much different as far as our basic needs and aspirations are concerned. All the while nature, architecture, culture, food, work, etc can be dramatically different. Getting to know that there are more than one way to look at things helps build a mutual understanding and thus our tolerance for others goes up as well.
  • Volunteer your time and talents. Give without expecting anything back in return and you will be given and provided for beyond measure. Your gratitude and servitude will make others better off and you will feel great about yourself. Topping this list off is that you never know whom you will bump into who just may change your life forever.
  • Pay it forward and carry out random acts of kindness. Is it not sad if at the end of each day you have to admit to yourself that you have not been able to one kind thing for another person? Change this as fast as you can. You will feel great and you are giving someone reason for renewed hope. Don’t you like it when others recognize your existence?
  • Share your best skill or expertise with others. There is no excuse for you not to share your talents with others. Social media allow for you to do this with little to no cost. Local business associations, interest groups, Scouts, etc always look for people who can present on a relevant topic. Here is a chance for you to make provide information and training to others, you also raise your net worth with your employer. You brush up on presentation skills and at the same time people will always seek more of your advice.
  • Limit your time spent watching TV, computer, cell phone, etc. Much like the above comment about work here are just some of the many activities that your mind and life go into full blast inactive mode. They are a total waste of time. Read a book, take a walk, but for heaven’s sake do not let your life go into idle mode.
  • Be physically active. An idle mind is the devil’s workshop. Physically, there is a similar issue. We sit and rest way too much. Get up and get going, join a gym, participate in physical activity opportunities at work. Getting the bad juices out your system by exercising is a terrific stress and depression buster.

We are blessed beyond measure living in a country full of helpful people and organizations. You have no one but yourself in your way to grow socially and professionally. Here is my call to action for you to live to your full potential – all you have to do is to give your talents to others.

A workforce change is coming that any entrepreneur should pay attention to 

The “Gray Tsunami” will hit your workplace within the next 5 to 10 years. And it will be a hard hit. Baby-boomers and GenXers will be retiring in record numbers. It is already challenging attaining and retaining talent and that is likely going to get even worse. The youngest workforce called Millennials should be rolling in. Problem is that they may not be interested in joining you.

There are two key issues to overcome. First of all, you the entrepreneur is shunning this part of the workforce. You do not like that they are the most entrepreneurial, they maybe too aggressive with their career goals, and that they may need a lot more attention than your current folks. The other issue is that your company has no idea how to keep this terrific talent at your workplace.

Both issues are so easy to resolve and you would be a fool not to embrace them with open arms. They are awesome multitaskers for starters. They grew up with technology from the day they were born. They were challenged and put under so much more pressure education and expectation wise like no other generation before. They thrive in a good company cultures that embraces them and they can be loyal like no other generation before them. That leads me to three key items that your organization must be able to provide to them in order for them to be attracted enough to join you and then to stay around:

  1. Purpose: Like no other generation before them they like for their time to count for something. Is it worth their time to spent time with you and your company? How will this make other people better off? Is the organization willing to do something for community and environment?
  2. Structure: They embrace structure. This means everything from training plan, to career building. While Babyboomer and GenX folks may be excited by hearing their leaders giving them the freedom to “go figure it out yourself”, Millennials thrive in an evironment where there are hard and soft rules how you want them to handle tasks and finding solutions for everyday problems. They excel at sharing information and solutions – how cool is this?
  3. Career pathway: Millennials are very keen on finding out early what their career advancement may look like and how to get there. They may be to overzealous, but they are very excited to put the effort into their careers and they can be very loyal to an organization that is willing to help them get there. The only effort the business leader must make is creating the career pathway plan how their employees can get there.

According to a study published in SmartCEO recently manufacturing has the 4th oldest workforce. This will mean these folks with be aging out at impressive numbers within the next 5 to 10 years. Companies had better figure out a better way embracing the up and coming new team members, or they will lose out to business leaders who make the effort preparing their organizations accordingly. Please welcome all age and education groups into your organization, or you will face significant issues in attaining and then retaining talent.

So you worked your bum off and now you got promoted to leader-manager. It is really not all that tough. What changes is that you will need to spend some time on the leadership topic, otherwise the people you are supposed to serve will start losing trust in you and your company. Here are 12 quick tips that can make a huge difference for how well you lead your team.

  • Park your personal agenda and ego: Did you ever like a boss that is only concerned about his / her own issues, but never yours? Turn that down a notch or two. Have you ever seen the movie “Saving Private Ryan”? In it there is a great line about leadership: “Never gripe down, always gripe up.” Your folks are not interested about your woes; their’s are big enough the way they are.
  • Be fair: Kick up the old golden rule to platinum level. Treat others how they would like to be treated. Never treat people differently. You will regret it in the end. The moment you lose their trust you will no longer be privy to vital people and company information. There has to be clarity about what applies to everyone.
  • Help promote your team members: Nothing shows more respect than to be a great career steward. Help your team advancing in their careers.
  • What happens at the work place, stays at the work place: Other than the heavy hitters of employee safety, harassment, discrimination, moral, and ethical problems, no other team member information is supposed to leave your lips. Confidentiality is the keystone to how much you will be trusted as a leader.
  • Make sure having a great one on one contact with your team members: Nothing beats being able to help and assist your team members on a one on one basis. You get to know about their struggles and aspirations and you can help make a difference happen.
  • Listen, listen, and listen: Your organization can tell you anything you want to know about the state of mind of your folks and also the strategic and tactical progress you are making (or the lack thereof). Boy, did that take me a while to learn how to do this better. Asking engaging questions is the tougher but better thing to do and you get to listen to your organization’s creativity come alive.
  • Embrace transparency and collaboration: This builds trust. Trust begets creativity. Realize that you cannot and should work alone. You need all the help you can get working toward common goals. The worst that can happen in business is to have success. Success can outgrow and outspend you in a heartbeat. You need a team that is nimble and fully engaged in order to make it through the ups and downs of the economy.
  • Be humble and grateful: Nothing beats a little self-depreciating humor when you make mistakes. Admit them and make them public. No one – not even you – should be able getting away with not learning from your mistakes. At the same time you want your team to stay informed enough such that they will not have to make the same mistakes either. Be grateful for the openness your team affords you. Not allowed are intentional or pattern of mistakes.
  • Do something with what they tell you: When your team is trying to tell you that there is a systemic problem with a process, policy, people, etc. do something with this info. That is why you became the leader-manager in the first place. Do not let anyone else handle this important detail for you. This needs to come from and through you. Taking charge of difficult situations is (unfortunately) something you will to get to deal with. Do it well and people will trust you.
  • Be mindful of other people’s time commitments: Knowing when to end a conversation is tough. Sometimes it feels great speaking with like minded folks about issues you are mutually facing. Cut it short if it no longer serves the purpose. Do not fall victim to scope creep either. One issue leads to the next and then there is another one, etc. etc. Trust me, there are more challenges than you can shake a stick at. Keep it to solving one short and effective issue at a time.
  • Prepare meetings well ahead of time: Most meetings are really not necessary, or the are simply not effective. Too often leader-managers look at them as a “working meeting”, meaning that the problem, problem statement, and possible solution finding happen with the attendees hearing about this issue for the first time.
  • Start and end meetings on time: Do this religiously. Yes, there are times when it may be necessary to run over. Attempt your very best to get a reputation for beginning and ending on time. Your folks want to get their tasks done.

Do not be afraid to fail with any of the above topics. Only very few business schools are providing leadership and soft skill training – yet. I am hoping that one day leader-manager training will become a mandatory topic at graduate and undergraduate level. Plan, Do, Reflect, and Correct your future behavior and you will have made the biggest change already. Good luck!
